Renaud Beauchard is a lawyer, professor and author of essays and screenplays. Mr. Beauchard focuses on issues related to international law, human rights, social responsibility and impact, the protection of biodiversity and community engagement, and responsible investment in Africa.
In addition to his legal work, Mr. Beauchard is currently a technical consultant with RAES Production in Senegal, where he focuses on social-impact television, with a particular emphasis on promoting the public participation of women and youth in public life and in the economy.
Before joining the Law Offices of Peter C. Hansen in 2008 as one of its founding counsel, Mr. Beauchard worked for several years with a renowned boutique maritime law firm in Paris, where he handled matters ranging from collision, international debt recovery, cargo claims and marine insurance both before French courts and arbitration tribunals.
Mr. Beauchard has worked on rule of law, anti-corruption, corporate social responsibility (CSR) and State-owned enterprise (SOE) governance matters in Benin, the Central African Republic, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, Mauritania, Niger and Senegal for various organizations, including the Millennium Challenge Corporation, the World Bank, USAID (as funding entity), and the French Agency of International Development (FAID).
Skilled equally in common and civil law, Mr. Beauchard holds a postgraduate degree in private law from the University of Poitiers, an LLM from Cambridge University (UK), and a JD from Tulane University School of Law (U.S.). He is currently a fellow at the Institute of High Judicial Affairs in Paris, and an adjunct professor of law at American University Washington College of Law in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Beauchard is the author of two books published in French: L’assujettissement des nations (The Subjection of Nations) (2017), concerning Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS); and Christopher Lasch, Un populisme vertueux (A Virtuous Populism) (2018) on the famous social critic. Among his other published translations, Mr. Beauchard translated U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Stephen Breyer’s The Court and the World into French, in collaboration with the author.
Mr. Beauchard is a prolific author of articles for legal periodicals and academic publications, including book chapters in collected works, and reports on OHADA, the governance of State-owned enterprises (SOEs) and public hospitals, anti-corruption, cyber-justice, and the rule of law. He regularly publishes columns in Le Figaro, Marianne, Revue des Deux Mondes, Revue Esprit, Revue Limite and Revue L’Inactuelle. Mr. Beauchard has appeared several times on French National Radio’s France Culture. He frequently speaks at events on a wide range of topics including international trade, populism, globalization, counter-terrorism and freedom of speech.
Mr. Beauchard is a former Chair (2016-2017) and current Board Member of the Washington Foreign Law Society.
